SE17 Fund Drive June 17-24, 2025
At the 2024 SE17 in Chicago, the Executive Committee voted to create a fund in memory of our longtime colleague Perry Gethner, Regents Professor of Foreign Languages emeritus at Oklahoma State University, Stillwater, who passed away in November 2023. As an alumnus of Carleton College and a scholar who so often worked to bring the artistry of the marginalized and forgotten into our scholarly vista, Perry is remembered by us for his mentorship, decency, and the ability find a way to sing whenever presenting a paper on just about any topic. Indeed, Perry loved music and theatre and strongly supported bringing these arts to the entertainment at our conferences. With this in mind, the board voted to create the Perry Gethner Fund to ensure our conference can be held at smaller and/or less well funded sponsoring institutions, as well as to support the kind of musical and other entertainment that Perry so loved at all our meetings.
Our fund drive to endow the Perry Gethner Fund begins on June 17, 2025, which would have been Perry’s 78th birthday, and runs through June 24th. We encourage any level of giving to support this worthy cause that honors Perry’s memory by furthering the work he did for our society.

Lors de la réunion de la SE17 à Chicago en 2024, le Conseil d'administration a voté la création d'un fonds consacré à la mémoire de notre collègue de longue date Perry Gethner, Professeur émérite de langues étrangères à l’Université d’État de l’Oklahoma, décédé en novembre 2023. Ancien élève du Carleton College, chercheur engagé dans l’étude des œuvres de personnes marginalisées et oubliées, Perry nous inspire encore par son mentorat, son éthique et sa capacité à faire de n’importe quelle présentation scientifique un prétexte au chant. Perry aimait la musique et le théâtre et soutenait avec enthousiasme l'idée d'intégrer ces arts dans les divertissements proposés lors de nos conférences. C’est dans cet esprit qu’a été créé le fonds Perry Gethner, qui devra permettre à des institutions plus petites et/ou moins bien financées d’accueillir notre conférence annuelle, et d’y intégrer les arts du spectacle qu’il aimait tant.
Le 17 juin 2025, date qui aurait marqué le 78e anniversaire de notre cher collègue, la SE17 lancera donc une campagne de dons d’une semaine. Nous encourageons les donateurices à soutenir cette initiative selon leurs capacités, et ainsi à honorer la mémoire de Perry en poursuivant le travail qu'il a accompli pour notre société.
